P&M Plastics fabricates custom boat water tanks from food-safe, marine-grade HDPE — built to the exact dimensions of your vessel's hull space. Whether you're replacing an ageing tank, upgrading capacity, or fitting out a new build, we manufacture every tank to your measurements with precise inlet, outlet, and vent fittings positioned exactly where you need them. All tanks are pressure-tested before delivery.

Why HDPE for Boat Water Tanks

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the material of choice for marine potable water storage in Australia. It is certified to AS/NZS 4020 — the Australian and New Zealand standard for products in contact with drinking water, and the same certification required by plumbing regulations for any potable water vessel. HDPE is virtually inert, meaning it will not leach taste, odour, or harmful compounds into your water supply over decades of use.

Beyond food safety, HDPE is exceptionally well suited to the marine environment. It is impact-resistant, flexible enough to handle the constant vibration and stress of a moving hull without cracking, and UV-stabilised so it won't degrade in the harsh Queensland sun. It is also significantly lighter than fibreglass or stainless steel alternatives — which matters when you're watching boat trim and fuel economy.

Custom Shapes and Sizes

No two boat hulls are the same. Tank compartments are rarely a simple rectangle — they fit around ribs, stringers, keel structures, and hull curves. P&M Plastics fabricates tanks to any shape you need, including L-shapes, wedges, and tanks with internal baffles to reduce water surge under way. We can incorporate cutouts and notches to clear obstructions inside your bilge or locker.

To get started, measure the internal dimensions of the space the tank needs to occupy and note any obstructions. Bring or email those measurements to us and our team will advise on the best tank design, wall thickness, and fitting configuration for your application. There is no minimum order — we build single custom tanks as readily as a production batch for a boat builder.

Fittings and Connections

Every tank is built with the fittings you specify. Standard options include threaded BSP inlet and outlet fittings, vent connections, sender ports for float-gauge level indicators, and inspection hatches for cleaning access. Fittings are welded directly into the tank wall using the same HDPE material — creating a homogeneous bond as strong as the tank itself, with no gaskets, thread sealing tape, or corrosion points to fail.

We can supply tanks with hose barb fittings, camlock connections, or flanged ports depending on your plumbing setup. If you are unsure what suits your application, our team can advise based on your boat type and existing plumbing.

Built and Tested on the Gold Coast

Every tank leaves our Burleigh Heads workshop pressure-tested to confirm there are no leaks before it reaches your vessel. We supply a material certificate confirming AS/NZS 4020 compliance with each order. Tanks are typically completed within five to ten business days from design approval, with simpler rectangular tanks often faster.

We serve recreational boaties, commercial operators, boat builders, and marine repair yards across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and South East Queensland. Freight delivery is available for customers further afield, or you are welcome to collect in person from our workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What plastic do you use for boat water tanks?
We primarily use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for potable water tanks — it is food-safe, certified to AS/NZS 4020, and has excellent resistance to UV, impact, and the marine environment. For vessels requiring greater chemical resistance or operating in harsh saltwater conditions, we can also fabricate tanks from polypropylene (PP).
Can you build a tank to a custom shape?
Yes — all our boat water tanks are built to order. We fabricate to your exact measurements, including irregular shapes that fit around hull ribs, stringers, and other obstructions. Simply provide us with your internal dimensions and any fitting positions, and we will design and build to suit.
How do I measure for a custom boat water tank?
Measure the internal length, width, and height of the compartment the tank needs to fit into. Note any obstructions such as ribs or frames that require cutouts. Mark the positions of your desired inlet, outlet, vent, and sender port. Bring your measurements into our Gold Coast workshop or email them through and we can advise on the best tank design.
How long does it take to fabricate a boat water tank?
Lead times vary depending on complexity and our current workload, but most custom boat water tanks are completed within 5 to 10 business days from approval of the design. Simpler rectangular tanks are often faster. Contact us for an accurate turnaround on your specific job.
Are your tanks certified safe for drinking water?
Yes. We use HDPE sheet certified to AS/NZS 4020, which covers products in contact with drinking water. This is the same standard required by Australian plumbing regulations for potable water storage. A material certificate is supplied with every tank.
Do you deliver boat water tanks to Brisbane and beyond?
We are based on the Gold Coast and can arrange freight delivery throughout South East Queensland including Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and the Scenic Rim. For large or heavy tanks we can advise on the most practical freight option. Many customers also collect in person from our Nerang workshop.
