Sheet thickness
Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is the wear-resistance champion of the engineering plastics family. Its extremely long polymer chains give it lower friction than acetal and higher abrasion resistance than nylon, which is why it dominates chute liners, hopper liners, conveyor wear strips and any application where material slides under load. UHMWPE is widely used across mining, quarrying, food processing, agriculture, and bulk materials handling in Queensland and beyond.
Sizes and formats we stock
UHMWPE sheet is stocked in standard 2440 x 1220mm and 3000 x 1500mm sheets from 6mm through 100mm thickness. Common chute and hopper liner thicknesses are 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 20mm and 25mm. UHMWPE rod is held from 10mm to 250mm diameter for machined parts. Larger custom block can be cut to order.
Colours and grades
Natural (off-white) and green are the workhorse colours; black UHMWPE with carbon black is stocked for UV-exposed liner work. Premium grades include oil-filled UHMWPE for self-lubrication, ceramic-filled grades for extra abrasion resistance, and FDA food-grade UHMWPE for food processing applications. Each grade has its place; for most mining and bulk-handling work, natural or green standard grade is the right call.
UHMWPE compared to HDPE and nylon
Compared to standard HDPE, UHMWPE has roughly 4 to 6 times the wear life in abrasive sliding service and a coefficient of friction roughly half as high. The trade-off is that UHMWPE cannot be welded the way HDPE can, so it is not used for tanks or bunds. Compared to nylon, UHMWPE wins on wear and friction but loses on stiffness and impact load-bearing strength; nylon remains the right pick for gears, sprockets and high-load bushes.
Why P&M Plastics for UHMWPE work
We CNC route UHMWPE liners to chute drawings, machine wear pads and slider strips, and fit-out hopper interiors for mining and bulk handling clients across South East Queensland. Our shop carries the right grades for high-impact and low-temperature service, and we will recommend mounting (countersunk bolt patterns, weld-on studs or pin-fix) at quote time.

How We Fabricate UHMWPE
We fabricate UHMWPE using CNC routing for precision cutting and saw cutting for sheet to size. UHMWPE machines well on standard tooling but tends to be gummy if feed rates are too low; we run sharp tools and high feed to leave a clean finish. The material cannot be welded or chemically bonded for structural service, so all UHMWPE liners are fitted with countersunk bolts, weld-on studs or pin-fix systems specified at the drawing stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much longer does UHMWPE last than HDPE in a chute liner? +
In abrasive sliding service (sand, ore, gravel, grain) UHMWPE typically lasts 4 to 6 times longer than the same thickness of standard HDPE. Most mining clients see a payback inside the first liner change because crew time and downtime cost far more than the sheet price difference.
Can UHMWPE be welded? +
No. UHMWPE cannot be hot-air or extrusion welded the way standard HDPE can. The very long polymer chains will not flow and fuse in the welder, so all UHMWPE assemblies are mechanically fixed (bolts, weld-on studs, pin systems) or designed as separate replaceable liner segments.
Will UHMWPE deform under load? +
UHMWPE will creep slowly under sustained heavy load, especially at elevated temperatures. For most chute and slider applications under 60°C this is not a problem, but for high-load static service (bearing pads, jack pads) we step up to oil-filled nylon or acetal.
Is UHMWPE food grade? +
Yes. Food-grade UHMWPE certified to FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 is available and is widely used for food processing chain guides, slider rails and conveyor wear strips. Specify food grade at quote time so we draw from the right stock.
Will UHMWPE work in cold or frozen environments? +
Yes. UHMWPE keeps its low friction and impact resistance down to around -200°C, which is why it is used in cryogenic handling, frozen-food processing and cold storage chute work. It outperforms most other plastics on cold-impact.
How do you fix UHMWPE liners to a chute? +
The two common methods are countersunk bolts through a backing plate, or weld-on studs (set into a steel chute with the stud passing through a hole in the UHMWPE and tightened with a flanged nut and washer). For thinner sheet, pin-fix systems with stainless dowels are also used. We will spec the fix at quote time based on your chute drawing.
What thickness UHMWPE liner do I need? +
Bulk handling chute liners are usually 10mm to 25mm depending on impact load and abrasive feed. Sliding-only service goes down to 6mm; heavy fall-impact service (rock chutes, transfer points) goes to 30mm or 40mm. Send us the chute drawing and feed material and we will recommend the right thickness.
