Egg crate louvre panel (also called eggcrate, paralouver or troffer grid) is a moulded white plastic grid used as a ceiling light cover. The deep parallel cell pattern controls glare at low viewing angles, which is why it is widely used in offices, classrooms, healthcare and laboratories where computer screen glare and visual comfort matter. P&M Plastics stocks egg crate panels to standard Australian troffer sizes and cuts to non-standard sizes on the CNC.

Sizes and formats we stock

Egg crate is stocked pre-cut to standard 1200 x 600mm, 1200 x 300mm, 600 x 600mm and 1500 x 600mm troffer sizes. Full master sheets are 2400 x 1200mm. Standard cell sizes are 12mm and 15mm square (the K12 and K15 grades). The 12mm cell is the workhorse for office work; 15mm cell gives a slightly more open look.

Colours and grades

Bright white is the standard colour for office and commercial applications. Black egg crate is stocked for theatre, retail and studio applications where glare control is more important than light transmission. Aluminium-faced egg crate (white on top, polished aluminium below) is available for premium specifier work.

Egg crate compared to prismatic and opal panels

Egg crate transmits less total light than a clear prismatic panel but controls glare at low viewing angles far better, which is why it is the default for ceilings above computer workstations. Prismatic and opal panels give more total brightness but can reflect bright light into screens at desk height. For offices, classrooms, libraries and design studios, egg crate is the right answer; for retail, warehouse and industrial work, prismatic or opal usually wins on brightness.

Why P&M Plastics for egg crate work

We supply egg crate panels to electricians, lighting installers and office fit-out contractors across the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Standard sizes are kept in stock for trade pickup; custom sizes are CNC-cut same day. For old fittings we cut to a measured sample or template.

How We Fabricate Egg Crate Louvres

We cut egg crate on CNC routers and panel saws for high tolerance and clean edges. For installer work we can also pre-cut mounting clip slots or trim to fit specific frame profiles on request. The grid is brittle if cut with the wrong tooling; we use sharp tooling at moderate feed to keep edges clean and free of cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 12mm and 15mm egg crate? +

The 12mm cell (often called K12) is the most common and the standard for Australian office troffers. The 15mm cell (K15) gives a slightly more open look with marginally higher light transmission. For glare control in computer-heavy spaces, the 12mm cell is the safer pick.

Why use egg crate instead of a prismatic panel? +

Egg crate has a deep cell structure that cuts off direct view of the lamp at low viewing angles (typically 45 to 55 degrees off vertical), which dramatically reduces glare on computer screens and reading surfaces below. Prismatic panels give more total brightness but reflect more light at low angles, which can be uncomfortable in office and screen-heavy environments.

Can you cut egg crate to non-standard sizes? +

Yes. We CNC-cut egg crate to any rectangular dimension within standard sheet sizes. The grid is brittle if cut with the wrong tool; our CNC routers leave clean edges. Most cut-to-size jobs ship same day or next day.

What is the standard troffer size in Australia? +

1200 x 600mm and 1200 x 300mm are the two most common Australian troffer sizes; 600 x 600mm is the standard for ceiling grids on 600mm modules. We stock all three pre-cut for installer pickup.

How do I clean egg crate panels? +

Egg crate cleans best with a soft brush (paint brush or large makeup brush) to remove dust from inside the cells. For deeper cleaning, a damp microfibre cloth wiped over the face works. Avoid soaking the panel; the styrene base will soften if left wet for long periods.

Is egg crate flame-rated? +

Yes. Standard egg crate meets AS 1530 for use in commercial ceiling fittings under standard Australian building code. For special fire-rated zones (egress, healthcare specific areas) specify a fire-rated grade.

Can egg crate be used outdoors? +

No. Egg crate is a polystyrene-based product and is not UV stable. It will yellow and become brittle under sustained outdoor exposure. For outdoor lighting covers we use UV-stabilised prismatic sheet or polycarbonate instead.
