Acetal (polyoxymethylene, also known as Delrin or POM) is the engineering plastic of choice for precision machined parts: gears, bushings, bearings, valve components, sliders and any part where dimensional stability, low friction and a fine machined finish matter. P&M Plastics machines acetal for instrumentation, food processing, fluid handling and high-tolerance industrial applications.
Sizes and formats we stock
Acetal copolymer (POM-C) is stocked in plate from 6mm to 100mm thickness in standard 2030 x 1010mm sheet, and rod from 8mm to 200mm diameter. Acetal homopolymer (POM-H, Delrin) is held in rod for high-stiffness applications. Both grades are stocked in natural and black.
Colours and grades
Natural (off-white) is the workhorse for instrumentation and food work. Black acetal is used for parts that live outdoors or under UV. Premium grades include glass-filled, PTFE-filled and ESD (electrically dissipative) acetal for specialised applications. For most fabrication work, standard POM-C is the right pick because it resists centreline porosity that can affect homopolymer in thick sections.
Acetal compared to nylon
Acetal is dimensionally more stable than nylon in wet or humid environments because it absorbs almost no water (0.2% versus 2.5 to 3.0% for nylon). It machines to a finer finish, has a lower coefficient of friction in dry-running service, and holds tight tolerances over time. Nylon wins on raw toughness and impact load. For precision parts in moist or temperature-cycled service, acetal is the safer pick.
Why P&M Plastics for acetal parts
We CNC mill and turn acetal to engineering tolerances every week. The material cuts like soft brass: tight chip control, fine surface finish, clean threads. Our shop has the right tooling and feed rates to leave acetal parts ready to ship without secondary finishing for most jobs. For longer runs we quote machined parts or near-net-shape blanks.

How We Fabricate Acetal
We machine acetal on CNC mills and lathes to engineering tolerances of 0.05mm. Acetal cuts cleanly with standard tooling, threads to tight tolerances and accepts mechanical fasteners. The material is not weldable in the same way as polyolefins; for assembly, mechanical fasteners, snap fits or epoxy bonding are used. Solvent bonding is not effective on acetal.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between POM-C (copolymer) and POM-H (homopolymer)? +
POM-H (Delrin) is slightly stiffer and has higher tensile strength, but is prone to centreline porosity in thick rod sections, which can cause issues on critical sealing surfaces. POM-C is more uniform through the cross-section, slightly easier to machine and the right pick for most fabrication work. For ultra-high-stiffness thin parts, POM-H still wins.
Does acetal absorb water like nylon? +
No. Acetal absorbs only around 0.2 percent water at saturation, compared to 2.5 to 3.0 percent for nylon. This is why acetal is preferred for parts that need to hold tight tolerances in humid, wet or temperature-cycled service. For precision instrumentation, fluid handling and measurement parts, acetal is the safer choice.
Is acetal food-grade? +
Yes. Food-grade acetal certified to FDA 21 CFR 177.2470 is available and widely used for food processing valves, fittings, chain guides and conveyor parts. Specify food-grade at quote time so we draw from the right stock.
Can acetal be welded or glued? +
Acetal cannot be welded the way polyolefins can, and it does not respond well to most solvents or adhesives because of its low surface energy. For permanent joints we use epoxy bonding (with surface preparation), or design the part for mechanical assembly (screws, snap fits, press fits). Plasma or flame treatment helps with epoxy bonding.
What chemicals attack acetal? +
Acetal resists oils, fuels, alcohols and most neutral solutions, but is attacked by strong acids and strong oxidisers (concentrated nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide above 10 percent, chlorine). For acid-handling parts step up to PVDF or PTFE. Always check chemical compatibility against the SDS before quote.
How does acetal perform at elevated temperatures? +
Acetal holds its strength well to around 100°C continuous and tolerates short-term peaks to 140°C. Above 100°C the material begins to soften and creep, so for sustained hot service we recommend PEEK or PPS.
Can you machine acetal to a drawing? +
Yes. Send us a DXF, DWG, STEP or PDF and we will quote machined acetal parts to your tolerances. Acetal is one of the easiest engineering plastics to hold tight tolerances on, with most parts shipping within 5 to 10 working days from order.
