P&M Plastics specialises in custom acrylic bending and forming, transforming flat acrylic sheet into precision-curved components for industrial, commercial, and architectural applications. Whether you need a simple 90° guard, a multi-bend machine cover, a sweeping architectural curve, or a custom boat windscreen, our Gold Coast facility has the equipment and expertise to deliver.

Acrylic bending is about more than just heating and folding plastic.

Done poorly, it results in cracking, hazing, bubbles, and internal stress that leads to premature failure. Our process controls the heating rate, forming temperature, bend radius, and cooling cycle to produce stress-free bends with crystal-clear optical quality.

We use three primary forming methods depending on your application.

Strip heating (line bending) uses a narrow heating element to create precise straight-line bends: ideal for guards, machine covers, brochure holders, display stands, and box-style enclosures. We strip-bend acrylic from 2mm to 25mm thick with angle accuracy of ±0.5°.

Oven forming heats the entire sheet uniformly, allowing complex compound curves, domes, and free-form shapes. This method is used for boat windscreens, light diffusers, curved architectural panels, and display features that require smooth, flowing curves rather than sharp fold lines.

Drape forming uses gravity and moulds to create controlled curves over a specific shape: perfect for repeatable production parts like curved guards, covers, and light lenses.

Acrylic is the preferred material over polycarbonate when optical clarity matters. Cast acrylic transmits 92% of visible light (compared to ~88% for polycarbonate), doesn't yellow under UV exposure, and is easier to polish to a glass-clear finish.

For applications like retail displays, museum cases, light diffusers, and architectural glazing, acrylic's clarity and longevity make it the superior choice.

We regularly produce custom guards for machinery, curved covers for electrical and mechanical equipment, formed light diffuser panels, boat windscreens in clear and tinted acrylic, architectural feature panels, display curves for retail and hospitality, and sneeze guards with formed edges. Every formed component is inspected for optical clarity, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality before dispatch.

How It Works

1

Define Your Curve

Share your drawings or dimensions: specify bend angles, radii, and material preferences. We can work from sketches.

2

Method & Quote

We select the optimal forming method (strip heat, oven, or drape) and quote based on material, thickness, and complexity.

3

Precision Forming

Acrylic is heated to its forming temperature and bent or shaped using jigs and moulds for repeatable accuracy.

4

Finish & Deliver

Edges are polished, surfaces inspected for clarity and stress marks, then carefully packaged for dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will heat bending crack or craze the acrylic?
Not when done correctly. We control the heating rate, temperature, and cooling cycle precisely to prevent stress cracking and surface crazing. Cast acrylic is more forgiving than extruded sheet.
What's the tightest radius you can achieve?
As a general rule, the minimum internal bend radius is approximately 1.5× the sheet thickness. For a 6mm sheet, that's roughly a 9mm radius. Tighter bends are possible with thinner material.
Can you bend acrylic in multiple places on the same piece?
Yes: we regularly produce components with two, three, or more bends in a single sheet. Each bend is heated and formed sequentially using our strip heater.
What's the difference between strip heating and oven forming?
Strip heating creates a single straight bend line: ideal for guards, display stands, and box shapes. Oven forming heats the entire sheet uniformly for complex curves, domes, and compound shapes.
How does acrylic compare to polycarbonate for bending?
Acrylic gives far superior optical clarity (92% light transmission vs ~88%) and doesn't yellow over time. Polycarbonate has higher impact resistance but scratches more easily and degrades under UV. For displays, signage, and architectural features, acrylic is the better choice.
Can you form coloured or frosted acrylic?
Absolutely. We bend clear, coloured, frosted, opal, and mirror acrylic. The forming process works the same way: colour doesn't affect bending capability.
What tolerances do you hold on bend angles?
We typically hold ±0.5° on bend angles using precision jigs. For production runs, we build dedicated bending fixtures to ensure every part is identical.
Do you polish the edges after bending?
Yes: we offer flame polishing, diamond polishing, and buffing to achieve crystal-clear edges on all bent components.
