High Impact Acrylic

Modified acrylic with enhanced impact resistance for safety glazing and protective applications.

Outdoor suitable

High Impact Acrylic is a modified acrylic sheet engineered to keep the optical clarity, UV resistance and edge finish of standard cast acrylic while adding 6 to 10 times the impact strength. P&M Plastics specifies High Impact Acrylic for signage and displays that have to take real-world knocks: outdoor signage at street level, marine windows, machine guards near operator hands and public-facing screens in high-traffic retail.

Sizes and formats we stock

High Impact Acrylic is stocked in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm in standard 2440 x 1220mm and 3050 x 2030mm sheets. Clear is the primary grade; opal and a limited tinted range are stocked for signage work.

Colours and grades

Clear is the workhorse, with optical transmission close to standard acrylic. Opal grades are stocked for diffused LED signage and light boxes. Premium UV grades are available for outdoor signage where colour shift over years of sun would be unacceptable.

High Impact Acrylic compared to standard acrylic and polycarbonate

Compared to standard cast acrylic, High Impact Acrylic carries 6 to 10 times the impact resistance with almost no loss in clarity or UV stability. Compared to polycarbonate, it lacks polycarbonate's raw impact strength (polycarbonate is still 30 times stronger than acrylic) but holds up far better outdoors, polishes to a flame-cut edge and resists scratching better. For outdoor or impact-loaded signage that needs to look good for years, High Impact Acrylic is often the best balance.

Why P&M Plastics for High Impact Acrylic work

We laser cut, CNC route, flame polish and bond High Impact Acrylic to the same techniques as standard cast acrylic. Tensol-grade solvent bonding produces clear structural joints; CO2 laser cutting leaves a flame-polished edge ready to install. We use it routinely for client signage that needs to survive trolley impact, ladder scrapes, vandalism and storm debris.

How We Fabricate High Impact Acrylic

We fabricate High Impact Acrylic using CO2 laser cutting (clean flame-polished edge), CNC routing, diamond-edge polishing, line bending and thermoforming. The material accepts the same solvent bonding (Tensol 12, Acrifix) as standard acrylic for clear structural joints. All standard acrylic techniques apply with minor adjustments for the higher impact grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes High Impact Acrylic different from standard acrylic? +

High Impact Acrylic uses a modified resin and processing that gives it 6 to 10 times the impact resistance of standard cast acrylic, with almost no loss in clarity, UV stability or edge finish. The material behaves the same way under all standard acrylic fabrication: laser cuts, CNC routes, bonds with Tensol and polishes to a flame-cut edge.

When should I choose High Impact Acrylic over polycarbonate? +

When you need long-term UV resistance and a clean polished edge in addition to impact resistance. Polycarbonate beats High Impact Acrylic on raw impact strength but yellows under long-term UV and scratches easily. For outdoor signage, marine windows and public-area screens that need to look new for years, High Impact Acrylic is usually the better balance.

Can High Impact Acrylic be bonded with Tensol? +

Yes. High Impact Acrylic responds to standard acrylic solvent cements (Tensol 12, Acrifix 192 and others) and produces clear structural joints the same as standard cast acrylic. This is a key advantage over polycarbonate, which cannot be solvent-cemented.

Can High Impact Acrylic be laser cut? +

Yes. The material laser cuts cleanly to a flame-polished edge on a CO2 laser, the same as standard cast acrylic. The cut quality is high enough that no secondary edge finishing is required for most signage and display work.

How does High Impact Acrylic perform outdoors? +

Excellent. The material carries the same UV stability as standard cast acrylic, which is the gold standard for outdoor signage. It will not yellow under long-term sun and is suitable for permanent outdoor installations.

Will High Impact Acrylic still shatter under heavy impact? +

Under extreme impact (a bullet, a sustained sledgehammer hit) any acrylic can fail, including High Impact grades. For applications that need to stop projectiles or sustained attack (ballistic glazing, riot shields), polycarbonate is the right choice. For everyday vandalism, trolley impact and storm debris, High Impact Acrylic holds up.

What thickness do I need for outdoor signage? +

Most outdoor signage in High Impact Acrylic uses 5mm to 8mm depending on panel size and how it is mounted. Large unsupported panels (over 1m unsupported span) step up to 10mm or 12mm. Send us the application and we will recommend the right thickness.
