A skylight diffuser panel does two things: it lets light through and softens it. Without diffusion, a bare skylight throws a harsh beam of direct sunlight into a room — bright in one spot, dark everywhere else. A diffuser spreads that light evenly across the ceiling and floor, making the space feel naturally lit rather than spotlit. If your existing panel has yellowed, cracked, or gone brittle, replacing it is a straightforward job — provided you choose the right material and get the dimensions right.
What Is a Skylight Diffuser Panel?
A skylight diffuser panel is a translucent sheet fitted inside or below a skylight opening. Its job is to scatter incoming light rather than transmit it in a direct beam. Most panels sit in a frame or drop into a ceiling grid, and they're typically made from acrylic, polycarbonate, or prismatic sheet — each with different light transmission and diffusion characteristics.
They're common in commercial buildings, warehouses, schools, and residential homes with tubular or flat skylights. Over time, UV exposure causes most plastic diffusers to yellow and lose their light transmission — which is why replacement is such a common job.
Material Options for Diffuser Panels
Choosing the right material comes down to three factors: how much light you want to transmit, how long you need it to last outdoors or in UV-exposed conditions, and what load or impact resistance the panel needs.
Opal Acrylic (White Diffuser Sheet)
Opal acrylic is the most common choice for skylight diffuser panels. It's a milky-white sheet that scatters light evenly while still transmitting a useful amount — typically 30–55% depending on the grade. It's UV-stabilised, lightweight, easy to cut, and holds its colour well over many years. For most residential and commercial skylight applications, opal acrylic is the default recommendation.

Prismatic Sheet
Prismatic sheet is a clear acrylic panel with a textured surface of tiny pyramid-shaped prisms on one side. These prisms refract and spread light across a wide angle, making it ideal for fluorescent light fittings and commercial skylights where maximum light output with even distribution is the priority. It transmits more light than opal acrylic — often 85–92% — while still eliminating direct glare.
If you're replacing panels in a commercial ceiling grid or a large warehouse skylight system, prismatic sheet is often the better choice. It's also commonly used in egg crate louvre systems and suspended ceiling light panels.
Polycarbonate Diffuser Sheet
Where impact resistance is a concern — rooftop skylights that may be walked on, industrial environments, or panels exposed to hail — polycarbonate sheet is significantly tougher than acrylic. It won't shatter under impact the way acrylic can, and UV-stabilised grades maintain clarity and colour stability over time. The trade-off is that polycarbonate is more prone to surface scratching and can be slightly more expensive.
For most indoor diffuser applications, acrylic is the better value option. For external or semi-exposed panels, polycarbonate is worth the extra cost.
High-Impact Acrylic
If you want the optical clarity and UV performance of acrylic with better impact resistance than standard cast sheet, high-impact acrylic sheet sits between standard acrylic and polycarbonate in terms of toughness. It's a useful middle ground for applications where breakage is a risk but full polycarbonate isn't necessary.
Thickness: What You Actually Need
Most skylight diffuser panels are 3mm or 4mm thick. For panels up to around 600mm × 600mm, 3mm is typically sufficient. Larger panels — anything over 900mm in either dimension — benefit from 4mm or even 6mm to prevent sagging under their own weight or under load from cleaning and maintenance.
If your panel sits in a ceiling grid (like a T-bar suspended ceiling), the frame provides support along all four edges, so 3mm is usually fine regardless of size. If the panel is unsupported in the middle — spanning a large opening with only edge support — go thicker.
How to Measure for a Replacement Panel
Getting the dimensions right is the most important part of ordering a replacement skylight diffuser panel. Here's how to approach it:
First, measure the opening — not the old panel. Old panels often shrink, warp, or have been trimmed incorrectly. Measure the actual frame opening in millimetres, width × height (or width × length for rectangular panels).
Second, check how the panel is retained. If it drops into a rebate or sits on a lip, you need the panel to be slightly larger than the opening — typically 10–15mm overlap on each side. If it slides into a channel, measure the channel depth and allow clearance for easy insertion.
Third, note the existing thickness if you can. Replacing a 3mm panel with a 4mm one may mean it won't fit the existing frame without modification.

Cutting and Finishing Options
Most skylight diffuser panels are simple rectangular cuts — no profiling, no holes, just clean straight edges. We cut these on our CNC router or panel saw depending on the material and quantity. For round or irregular shapes (tubular skylight covers, for example), we can profile-cut using our CNC routing service .
Edge finish is worth considering. A saw-cut edge is functional but slightly rough. If the edge will be visible — in a frameless installation or a display-quality fit-out — we can machine or polish the edge for a cleaner result. For most ceiling grid and framed skylight applications, a standard saw cut is perfectly adequate.
Common Applications for Skylight Diffuser Panels
Skylight diffuser panels turn up in a wide range of settings. Here are the most common jobs we see:
Residential homes: Tubular skylights (Solatube, Velux, and similar) use a round diffuser at the ceiling end. These are often proprietary shapes, but we can cut round panels to match the diameter if the original is no longer available.
