Router Cut Signs Brisbane: Materials, Process & How to Order
Need router cut signs in Brisbane? Learn which materials work best, how CNC routing produces clean results, and how to order from P&M Plastics.
Router cut signs are one of the most versatile and durable signage options available. Whether you need dimensional lettering for a shopfront, directional signs for a commercial building, or branded panels for an event, CNC routing gives you clean edges, consistent results, and the ability to work across a wide range of materials. If you're based in Brisbane or South East Queensland and looking to get signs made, here's what you need to know before you place an order.
What Is CNC Router Cutting for Signs?
CNC routing uses a computer-controlled cutting head to machine shapes, letters, and profiles from flat sheet material. The router follows a digital path — typically derived from a DXF or vector file — and cuts through the material with a spinning bit. Unlike laser cutting, which uses heat, routing is a mechanical process that physically removes material. This makes it well suited to thicker sheets and materials that don't respond well to heat.
For signage specifically, CNC routing is used to produce cut-out letters, shaped panels, recessed engraving, and profiled edges. The process is highly repeatable, which matters when you're producing multiple identical signs for a retail chain or building complex.
At P&M Plastics, our CNC router services handle jobs from single prototypes through to production runs, with fast turnaround for Brisbane and Gold Coast customers.
Best Materials for Router Cut Signs
Material choice has a major impact on the finished look, durability, and cost of your signs. Here are the most commonly used options:
Acrylic (Perspex)
Acrylic is the go-to material for premium signage. It's available in a huge range of colours, finishes, and thicknesses, and it machines cleanly with a router. Cut acrylic letters have smooth edges that can be polished or left matte depending on the look you want. Acrylic is UV stable, weather resistant, and holds colour well outdoors — making it a strong choice for external signs in Queensland's harsh sun.
For router cut signs, acrylic is typically used in thicknesses from 3mm up to 20mm. Thicker sheet gives letters more depth and presence, which works well for dimensional signage mounted proud of a backing board. You can explore our acrylic and Perspex sheet range to see available colours and grades.
Foam PVC (Foamex)
Foam PVC is a lightweight, rigid board that routes easily and cleanly. It's a popular choice for indoor signs, retail displays, and temporary or event signage where weight is a consideration. Foam PVC won't rust or corrode, and it can be painted or printed on. It's not as durable as acrylic outdoors, but for internal applications it's cost-effective and easy to work with.
Our foam PVC sheet is available in white and a range of thicknesses suited to signage and display work.
Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP)
ACP is a sandwich panel with aluminium skins bonded to a polyethylene core. It's widely used in the signage industry for flat panel signs, building fascias, and wayfinding systems. CNC routing is used to cut ACP to shape, create v-grooves for folding, and machine out letter profiles. ACP is rigid, lightweight, and holds up well outdoors. It's commonly used for real estate signs, building identification, and retail fascias.
HDPE and Polypropylene
For industrial or outdoor signs that need to handle knocks and exposure without cracking, engineering plastics like HDPE and polypropylene are worth considering. They're impact resistant, chemically inert, and won't absorb moisture. These materials are less common for decorative signs but are well suited to safety signage, marine environments, and industrial facilities.
MDF and Plywood
MDF and plywood are frequently used for indoor signs, retail fitouts, and decorative applications. Both machine well on a CNC router and can be painted, laminated, or veneered after cutting. MDF gives a smooth, paintable surface ideal for lettering and shaped panels. Plywood offers more structural strength and a natural timber look when left exposed. These are not suitable for outdoor use without appropriate sealing and coating.
Design Considerations for Router Cut Signs
Getting the design right before you send files to the fabricator saves time and money. Here are the key things to keep in mind:
Minimum feature size: The router bit has a physical diameter, typically 3mm to 6mm for most sign work. Internal corners will have a small radius rather than a sharp point. If your design has very fine detail or thin strokes in lettering, check with your fabricator whether the bit size will affect the result. Very small letters or intricate logos may be better suited to laser cutting.
Font selection: Bold, sans-serif fonts generally route better than thin serif fonts. Script fonts can work but need careful review — letters that connect may need to be adjusted so the router path is continuous. Always convert text to outlines in your design software before sending files.
File format: DXF is the standard format for CNC routing. AI and PDF vector files are also commonly accepted. Raster images (JPG, PNG) cannot be used directly — they need to be traced and converted to vectors first. If you're not sure how to prepare your files, talk to the fabricator before you start.
Tabs and bridges: When cutting individual letters from sheet, small tabs are often left in the cut path to hold pieces in place during machining. These are snapped off after cutting and sanded smooth. If you're ordering cut-out letters, expect minor witness marks at tab locations — these are normal and easily cleaned up.
Finishing Options After Routing
Router cut signs can be supplied as raw cut pieces or finished to various levels depending on your requirements. Common finishing options include:
Edge polishing: Acrylic edges can be flame polished or machine polished to a clear, glossy finish. This is particularly effective on clear acrylic where the edge is visible.
Painting and coating: MDF and foam PVC signs are typically painted after routing. Acrylic can also be painted on the reverse face for a clean, durable colour finish.
Standoffs and mounting hardware: Dimensional letters are often mounted with standoffs to create a shadow effect against the wall. Holes can be pre-drilled during routing to make installation straightforward.
Laser engraving: Routing and laser engraving are sometimes combined — routing cuts the outer profile while engraving adds surface detail, logos, or text. Our laser engraving service can be used alongside CNC routing for more complex sign designs.
How to Order Router Cut Signs from Brisbane
P&M Plastics is based on the Gold Coast and regularly supplies router cut signs to customers across Brisbane, Logan, and South East Queensland. Ordering is straightforward:
1. Send us your files and dimensions. DXF or vector format preferred. Include material type, thickness, quantity, and any finishing requirements.
2. We'll review the files and come back with a quote. If there are any issues with the design — minimum feature sizes, font detail, or file format — we'll flag them before cutting starts.
3. Once approved, we cut and finish your signs. Turnaround depends on complexity and quantity, but most standard jobs are completed within a few business days.
4. Signs can be picked up from our Gold Coast workshop or shipped to your Brisbane address. We use appropriate packaging to protect edges and faces during transit.
If you're not sure which material suits your application, our team can advise based on your environment, budget, and finish requirements. We work with sign makers, fitout contractors, architects, and direct end users — so whether you're ordering one sign or a full building suite, we can help.
