PVC Sheets: Types, Uses, and How to Choose the Right One

A practical guide to PVC sheets — rigid vs foam, key properties, common applications, and how to choose the right grade for your fabrication job.

PVC sheets are one of the most widely used plastic materials in fabrication — and for good reason. They're affordable, chemically resistant, easy to machine, and available in a range of formats that suit everything from signage and displays to industrial liners and marine fitouts. But not all PVC sheets are the same, and picking the wrong type for your job can cause real headaches down the line.

This guide breaks down the main types of PVC sheet, what they're each good for, and how to make the right call when you're specifying a job.

The Two Main Types of PVC Sheet

When people talk about PVC sheets, they're usually referring to one of two distinct products: rigid PVC (also called uPVC or hard PVC) and foam PVC (sometimes called expanded PVC or Forex board). They share the same base polymer but behave very differently in practice.

Rigid PVC Sheet

Rigid PVC is a dense, solid sheet with excellent chemical resistance and good mechanical strength. It's the go-to material for applications that need to hold up in wet, corrosive, or industrial environments. Common uses include chemical tank liners, ducting, splash-backs, wet area cladding, and industrial guards.

Rigid PVC is available in grey and white as standard, with grey being more common in industrial settings. It machines cleanly with standard tooling — you can saw, drill, rout, and weld PVC using hot-gas techniques to build tanks, enclosures, and bespoke structures. It's heavier than foam PVC but significantly more rigid and impact-resistant.

Foam PVC Sheet

Foam PVC has a cellular core that makes it significantly lighter than rigid PVC at the same thickness. It has a smooth, paintable surface and cuts cleanly with both CNC routers and laser cutters. It's the dominant material in the signage industry — used for shop signs, point-of-sale displays, exhibition panels, and interior fitouts.

Our foam PVC sheet is stocked in white as standard and is available in thicknesses from 1mm through to 19mm. The thinner gauges are used for printed panels and overlays; the thicker boards are used for structural signage, display frames, and cabinet components.

Key Properties of PVC Sheet

Understanding the core properties of PVC helps you decide whether it's the right material for your job — or whether something like polypropylene or HDPE would serve you better.

Chemical Resistance

Rigid PVC has outstanding resistance to acids, alkalis, salts, and many organic solvents. This makes it a reliable choice for chemical storage, fume hoods, laboratory fitouts, and any environment where spills or splashes are a regular occurrence. Foam PVC is less commonly used in chemical environments but still offers reasonable resistance for light-duty applications.

Weatherability

Standard PVC sheets are not ideal for prolonged UV exposure. Over time, unmodified PVC can yellow and become brittle in direct sunlight. For outdoor signage or cladding applications, you'll want to specify UV-stabilised grades or consider whether a material like polycarbonate or HDPE might be a better long-term choice. For sheltered outdoor use — under awnings, inside enclosures — standard PVC performs well.

Machinability

Both rigid and foam PVC machine well. Rigid PVC can be sawn, drilled, routed, and welded. Foam PVC cuts cleanly on a CNC router and can also be laser cut, though laser cutting PVC requires proper fume extraction due to the chlorine gas released during cutting. Temperature Range

PVC has a relatively modest heat resistance compared to engineering plastics. Rigid PVC starts to soften around 60–65°C, which limits its use in high-temperature environments. If your application involves elevated temperatures, materials like polypropylene or PTFE are worth considering instead.

Common Applications for PVC Sheets

PVC sheets turn up in a surprisingly wide range of industries and applications. Here's where they're most commonly specified:

Signage and Display

Foam PVC is the backbone of the signage industry. It's lightweight enough to hang without heavy fixings, takes vinyl wrap and direct print well, and cuts to precise shapes without chipping or cracking. It's used for everything from real estate boards and retail displays to exhibition stands and wayfinding signage.

Industrial and Chemical Applications

Rigid PVC sheet is widely used in industrial settings for chemical tanks, bund liners, splash guards, and ducting. Its chemical resistance and weldability make it practical for fabricated enclosures and containment systems. Rigid PVC's resistance to moisture and salt makes it a viable option for marine fitouts and outdoor enclosures in sheltered environments. It won't rust or corrode, and it's easy to clean. Rigid PVC vs Foam PVC: Which Do You Need?

The choice between rigid and foam PVC usually comes down to three factors: structural load, weight, and surface finish requirements.

Choose rigid PVC when you need structural integrity, chemical resistance, or the ability to weld sections together. It's the right call for tanks, bunds, industrial guards, and wet area linings.

Choose foam PVC when weight is a priority, when you need a smooth printable surface, or when the application is primarily visual rather than structural. It's the right call for signage, displays, and interior fitout panels.

If you're unsure, it's worth talking to a fabricator who works with both. The cost difference between the two is often less significant than the performance difference in the wrong application.

Ordering PVC Sheet: What to Specify

When you're ordering PVC sheets, you'll need to specify the following:

Type: Rigid (uPVC) or foam PVC. Don't assume the supplier knows which you mean — they're different products with different price points.

Thickness: Rigid PVC is commonly available from 1mm to 20mm+. Foam PVC ranges from 1mm to 19mm. Specify the thickness that matches your structural and aesthetic requirements.

Colour: White and grey are standard. Some suppliers offer black rigid PVC. If you need a specific colour in foam PVC, it's often more practical to paint or wrap white board.

When PVC Isn't the Right Answer

PVC is a versatile material, but it's not always the best choice. Here are situations where you'd typically look elsewhere:

High UV exposure: Standard PVC degrades in prolonged direct sunlight. Consider HDPE, polycarbonate, or UV-stabilised acrylic for outdoor applications.

High temperatures: PVC softens at relatively low temperatures. For heat-exposed applications, polypropylene or PTFE are more appropriate.

Optical clarity: PVC sheet is not optically clear. If you need transparency, acrylic or polycarbonate are the right materials.

Food contact: Standard PVC is generally not recommended for direct food contact. HDPE and polypropylene are better choices for food-grade applications like cutting boards and food processing equipment.
