Perspex sheet is one of the most widely used materials in fabrication — and also one of the most misunderstood. People use the term loosely to mean any clear plastic sheet, but Perspex is actually a specific brand of cast acrylic manufactured by Lucite International. It has a distinct quality profile, a broad colour range, and properties that make it worth specifying by name when the job demands consistency and clarity.
This guide covers the main types of Perspex sheet, how they differ from each other and from generic acrylic, what thicknesses and colours are available, and how to match the right grade to your application.
What Is Perspex Sheet?
Perspex is a brand name for cast acrylic sheet — polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) produced by pouring liquid monomer between two glass plates and allowing it to cure. This casting process gives Perspex its key advantages over extruded acrylic: tighter thickness tolerances, better optical clarity, higher surface hardness, and improved resistance to solvents and machining stress.
In practical terms, cast Perspex sheet machines more cleanly, bonds more reliably with acrylic cements, and holds its surface finish better over time. For display work, signage, and anything that will be seen up close, these differences matter.
The Main Types of Perspex Sheet
Clear Perspex
Standard clear Perspex sheet transmits around 92% of visible light — comparable to optical glass. It's the default choice for display cases, machine guards, glazing panels, signage faces, and anywhere transparency is the primary requirement. Available from 1.5 mm up to 25 mm or more in standard stock, with thicker slabs available to order.
Coloured Perspex
Perspex is available in an extensive range of transparent, translucent, and opaque colours. Transparent colours allow light to pass through with a tint — ideal for illuminated signage and decorative panels. Translucent colours diffuse light evenly, which works well for backlit displays and light boxes. Opaque colours block light entirely and are used for signage, retail fixtures, and architectural elements. Frosted Perspex
Frosted Perspex has a satin surface texture on one or both sides that diffuses light and obscures direct views through the sheet. It's a popular choice for privacy screens, bathroom panels, office partitions, and decorative applications where you want light transmission without full transparency. The frosted finish is part of the sheet itself — not a film or coating — so it won't peel or scratch off.
Mirrored Perspex
Mirrored acrylic sheet has a reflective metallic coating applied to the back surface. It's significantly lighter than glass mirror, shatter-resistant, and easy to cut and form. High Impact Acrylic
For applications where standard acrylic might crack under impact — machine guards, safety screens, point-of-sale fixtures — high impact acrylic sheet offers a tougher alternative. It's a modified grade that retains good clarity while delivering significantly better impact resistance than standard cast or extruded acrylic.
Perspex Sheet Thicknesses and Sheet Sizes
Standard Perspex sheet is available in a wide range of thicknesses. Common stock thicknesses include 1.5 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm. Thicker slabs up to 50 mm or beyond can be sourced to order for engineering or display applications.
Full sheet sizes are typically 1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft equivalent), though some grades and colours come in 2050 × 3050 mm jumbo sheets. For most jobs, buying Perspex cut to size is more practical — you get exactly the dimensions you need, with no offcut waste to manage.
Choosing thickness comes down to the structural demands of the application. A 3 mm sheet is fine for a small display panel or sign face. A machine guard or aquarium front panel needs at least 6–10 mm depending on span and pressure. For anything structural or load-bearing, it's worth doing a deflection calculation or asking your fabricator for a recommendation.
How Perspex Is Fabricated
Perspex sheet can be cut, routed, laser cut, bent, bonded, and polished. Each process has its place depending on the geometry and finish required.
Laser cutting produces a flame-polished edge directly from the cut — no secondary finishing needed for most applications. It's the preferred method for intricate shapes, lettering, and parts that need a clean presentation edge. CNC routing is better suited to thicker sheet, larger panels, and parts that need pockets, rebates, or drilled holes. The edge finish from routing requires polishing if optical clarity is needed, but for structural or hidden edges it's perfectly acceptable as-machined.

Bonding with solvent cement creates joints that are effectively invisible and nearly as strong as the parent material — a key advantage of cast acrylic over polycarbonate, which is harder to bond cleanly.
Perspex vs Generic Acrylic: Does the Brand Matter?
For most fabrication work, a quality cast acrylic from any reputable manufacturer will perform similarly to Perspex. The brand matters most when you need guaranteed colour consistency across batches, specific certified grades (such as UV-stabilised or fire-rated), or when you're working to a specification that calls out Perspex by name.
Where generic extruded acrylic is noticeably inferior is in machining behaviour and thickness consistency. Extruded sheet has internal stresses that can cause cracking when drilled or routed aggressively, and thickness can vary by ±0.5 mm or more across a sheet. Cast Perspex holds tighter tolerances and machines with less risk of stress cracking.

Perspex sheet turns up across a wide range of industries and applications. Some of the most common include:
Retail and display: Display cases, product stands, sign faces, light boxes, and point-of-sale fixtures. Clear and coloured grades are both heavily used here.
Signage: Laser-cut lettering, backlit panels, illuminated sign faces, and dimensional graphics. Perspex's edge clarity makes it ideal for edge-lit LED applications.
Industrial and safety: Machine guards, safety screens, and inspection windows. Thicker clear sheet is used where visibility into a process is needed without sacrificing operator protection.
Architectural and interior: Balustrade infill panels, skylight glazing, shower screens, and decorative wall features. Frosted and coloured grades are popular for interior design applications.
Marine and outdoor: Windscreens, hatches, and port lights. UV-stabilised grades maintain clarity outdoors for many years without yellowing.
