Acrylic panels are one of the most versatile materials in fabrication. They turn up in shopfitting, signage, machine guarding, marine interiors, skylights, display cases, and dozens of other applications — often because nothing else quite matches their combination of clarity, workability, and weather resistance. But "acrylic panel" covers a wide range of products, and choosing the wrong one wastes time and money. What Is an Acrylic Panel?
Acrylic — also sold under brand names like Perspex, Plexiglas, and Acrylite — is a thermoplastic made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). In sheet or panel form, it offers optical clarity close to glass, roughly half the weight, and significantly better impact resistance than standard glass. It machines cleanly, bonds well with the right adhesives, and can be heat-formed into curves and shapes.
Acrylic panels are available in two manufacturing grades — cast and extruded — and come in a wide range of colours, finishes, and thicknesses. Understanding those differences is the first step to specifying the right panel for your job.
Cast vs Extruded: The Grade That Matters Most
Cast acrylic is made by pouring liquid monomer between glass moulds and curing it slowly. The result is a panel with consistent thickness, excellent optical clarity, and better resistance to solvents and heat. It machines and polishes well, making it the preferred choice for display work, signage, and anything that will be laser cut or engraved.
Extruded acrylic is pushed through a die in a continuous process. It costs less and is available in longer sheet runs, but thickness tolerances are wider and it tends to be softer — which means it scratches more easily and can craze when exposed to certain solvents. For general glazing, protective screens, and applications where cost matters more than optical perfection, extruded panels are a practical choice.

Types of Acrylic Panels and Their Common Uses
Clear Acrylic Panels
The most commonly specified panel. Clear acrylic transmits around 92% of visible light — slightly more than glass — which makes it ideal for glazing, display cases, machine guards, and protective screens. Thicknesses typically run from 2 mm up to 25 mm or more, with thicker panels used where structural rigidity or impact resistance is needed.
Coloured and Tinted Panels
Coloured acrylic panels are used extensively in signage, retail display, and architectural feature work. Colours are consistent through the full thickness of the sheet — unlike painted surfaces, the colour won't chip or peel. Tinted panels (grey, bronze, smoke) are popular for privacy screens, partitions, and decorative glazing where you want light transmission without full transparency.
Frosted and Satin Panels
Frosted acrylic diffuses light rather than transmitting it clearly. It's widely used for light diffuser panels in LED installations, office partitions, bathroom screens, and decorative applications where a softer, more even glow is needed. Satin finishes are similar but typically have a finer texture.
Mirror Acrylic Panels
Mirror acrylic has a reflective coating applied to one face, giving a mirror-like finish at a fraction of the weight of glass mirrors. High Impact Acrylic Panels
Standard acrylic is stiffer and more brittle than polycarbonate. Where panels are likely to take knocks — machine guarding, safety screens, or outdoor installations — high impact acrylic sheet offers improved toughness while retaining much of the optical clarity and surface quality of standard cast acrylic.
How Acrylic Panels Are Cut and Fabricated
Getting a clean, accurate panel starts with the right cutting process. At P&M Plastics, we use two main methods depending on the job:
CNC routing is the go-to for thicker panels, complex shapes, and parts that need drilled holes or routed profiles. Our CNC router services handle acrylic from around 3 mm up to 25 mm with consistent accuracy across the full sheet.

Choosing the Right Thickness
Thickness selection comes down to the span of the panel, the loads it will carry, and whether it needs to be rigid or flexible. Here's a rough guide:
2–3 mm: Small display panels, name badges, thin decorative overlays. Flexible enough to bow if unsupported over large spans.
4–6 mm: General glazing, sneeze guards, light diffusers, retail display. The most commonly ordered range for everyday fabrication work.
8–12 mm: Machine guards, structural panels, aquarium viewing windows, larger glazed openings. Rigid and self-supporting over wider spans.
15 mm and above: Heavy-duty applications, thick display blocks, structural components. Less common but available to order.
If you're replacing an existing panel, always measure the rebate depth before ordering — a panel that's too thin will rattle, and one that's too thick won't fit the frame.

When Acrylic Isn't the Right Choice
Acrylic panels are excellent in most applications, but there are situations where another material makes more sense. If impact resistance is the primary concern — think overhead glazing, safety barriers, or panels exposed to repeated physical stress — polycarbonate is worth considering. It's significantly tougher than acrylic, though it scratches more easily and yellows faster outdoors without UV-stabilised grades.
For chemical resistance or applications involving strong solvents, PETG or polycarbonate may outperform standard acrylic. And for opaque panels where appearance is less critical, foam PVC or HIPS can be more cost-effective alternatives.
