Why Gold Coast businesses choose P&M for Polycarbonate machine guards

Polycarbonate is the right glazing for machine guards because it carries 200 to 250 times the impact strength of acrylic and roughly 30 times that of standard glass, while staying optically clear. P&M Plastics keeps clear and UV-stabilised polycarbonate sheet in stock from 3mm up to 12mm, and we CNC-cut, drill, edge-finish and cold-form panels to suit your guard frame or interlock housing.

  • Clear and UV-grade polycarbonate sheet (Lexan equivalent) stocked in 3, 4.5, 6, 8, 10 and 12mm
  • CNC routed, laser-cut, drilled and counter-bored to your DXF or PDF drawing
  • Polished edges, radius corners and cold-bent panels available
  • Compliant with AS 4024 fixed-guard transparency requirements when specified
  • Turnaround from 1-5 working days for cut-to-size; 5-10 for fabricated assemblies

What Gold Coast factories use polycarbonate machine guards for

Our regular machine-guard work falls across three local industries. First, the Gold Coast food-processing belt running through Yatala and Stapylton: clear polycarbonate windows on packing-line guards, mixer access panels and conveyor crossover gates. Second, the marine and trades workshops along the Burleigh and Currumbin industrial estates: lathe and mill enclosures, CNC router head guards, and bench-top safety screens. Third, light-industrial sites in Nerang, Molendinar and Arundel needing perimeter guards around pallet wrappers, palletisers, and end-of-line conveyor turns.

We tend to spec 6mm clear polycarbonate as the default for hand-reach guards and step up to 8mm or 10mm where the guard sits within projectile or chip-throw distance of a cutting tool. For interlocked access panels we cold-form a 4.5mm or 6mm sheet around an aluminium frame, drill for the interlock switch and ship the glazed panel ready to bolt up. For replacement windows on existing guard frames, we cut to the existing aperture and supply with the same edge prep (radius, polished or counter-bored) as the original.

AS 4024 calls for guard transparency that resists the worst-case impact for the machine class. Polycarbonate is the only common transparent material that hits the AS 4024 figures without lamination, which is why most modern AS 4024 guards specify polycarbonate over acrylic or laminated safety glass. If your job needs the impact-test data, we can supply the material data sheet (MDS) and a fabrication declaration with each delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What thickness polycarbonate do I need for a machine guard on a CNC router or mill? +

For hand-reach perimeter guards on a small mill or CNC router, 6mm clear polycarbonate is the typical spec. For larger machines, cutting tools generating heavier chip throw, or where the guard sits within 600mm of the cutter, step up to 8mm or 10mm. We can recommend a thickness once you describe the machine, the guard distance from the cutting tool, and the AS 4024 risk category if known.

Will polycarbonate scratch or yellow over time on a factory floor? +

Polycarbonate is softer than acrylic and will scratch from grit on a wiped cloth. For high-handle factory environments we recommend the hard-coated grade (Lexan Margard or equivalent) which carries an abrasion-resistant coating both faces. Standard GP polycarbonate yellows after 4 to 6 years of UV exposure; the UV-stabilised grade resists yellowing for 10+ years and is the right pick for guards near skylights or external work areas.

Can you bend polycarbonate machine guards in a corner radius? +

Yes. Polycarbonate cold-bends down to roughly 175 times the sheet thickness without stress whitening, so a 6mm sheet bends down to a roughly 1050mm radius cold. Tighter radii are done by line-bending (localised heat along the bend line) or full vacuum forming. For complex enclosed guards we typically vacuum-form the corners and seam them onto flat panels.

Do you supply pre-drilled polycarbonate to fit existing guard frames? +

Yes. Send the existing frame drilling pattern (DXF, PDF or even a paper template) and we will CNC-rout the panel and drill the bolt pattern to match. Counter-bored sockets for cap-head fixings are also routine. Most replacement glazing jobs ship same-week if the panel is under 1500 x 1000mm.

What is the lead time on a custom polycarbonate machine guard on the Gold Coast? +

Simple cut-and-drill panels typically ship within 1 to 5 working days. Fabricated assemblies (cold-bent housings, polished edges, multiple components) sit at 5 to 10 working days. Urgent factory shutdowns are routinely fast-tracked when stock allows; phone for current lead time.

Is polycarbonate AS 4024 compliant? +

Polycarbonate is the standard transparent material specified to satisfy AS 4024.1 fixed-guard glazing requirements because it carries enough impact resistance to pass the standard impact tests without lamination. The compliance ultimately rests on the machine guard designer specifying the correct thickness for the machine risk category; the material itself is suitable. We can supply the polycarbonate material data sheet on request.

Do you deliver polycarbonate machine guards to Brisbane and Logan factories? +

Yes. Our standard delivery radius covers Gold Coast city wide, Tweed Heads, Logan and Brisbane Southside. Northside Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Northern NSW are routine for panels under 3050 x 2050mm. Larger or stacked deliveries are quoted on a flatbed run.
