Thickness range

Prismatic sheet (also called light diffuser, fluorescent panel or troffer panel) is a clear or opal acrylic sheet with a moulded prismatic pattern on the back face that diffuses light evenly across the panel. It is the standard cover for fluorescent ceiling lights, LED troffers and back-lit display panels in commercial spaces, schools, offices, retail and industrial applications across Australia.

Sizes and formats we stock

Prismatic sheet is stocked in 2.5mm and 3mm in standard 2440 x 1220mm sheets and pre-cut to common Australian troffer sizes: 1200 x 600mm, 1200 x 300mm, 600 x 600mm and 1500 x 600mm. Custom sizes are cut to order on the CNC.

Patterns and grades

Standard prismatic pattern (sometimes called K12 or square prism) is the workhorse for office and commercial ceiling work. Opal (smooth white diffuser) is stocked for soft-light applications where pattern is undesirable. Frosted and microprism patterns are stocked for premium architectural lighting and decorative panels.

Prismatic sheet compared to opal sheet

Prismatic sheet diffuses light through a moulded geometric pattern, which scatters light evenly while preserving more brightness. Opal sheet diffuses by adding a white pigment to the resin, which gives a softer light but lower overall transmission. For maximum brightness at the panel face (school halls, warehouses, retail) use prismatic. For soft architectural and residential lighting where uniformity is more important than brightness, use opal.

Why P&M Plastics for prismatic panels

We supply prismatic and opal panels to electricians, lighting installers and commercial fitout contractors across South East Queensland. Standard Australian troffer sizes are kept in pre-cut stock; custom sizes are CNC-cut same day for trade pickup. For replacement panels in old fittings we cut to exact measurements from a sample or template.

How We Fabricate Prismatic Sheet

We cut prismatic sheet on CNC routers for tight tolerances on troffer-replacement work, and on panel saws for high-volume standard sizing. Most jobs are simple rectangular cuts; for installer work we can also drill mounting holes, cut clip slots or pre-trim to specific frame profiles on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness prismatic sheet should I use? +

Standard 1200 x 600mm troffer panels use 2.5mm prismatic. For larger panels (1500 x 600mm and up) or unsupported spans, step up to 3mm. For very large back-lit signage panels above 1m unsupported, we sometimes specify 4mm or 5mm.

Can you cut prismatic sheet to non-standard troffer sizes? +

Yes. Send us the dimensions or a sample of the old panel and we will CNC-cut to your size. Most cut-to-size prismatic jobs ship same day or next day, with cut tolerance of +/-0.1mm on the CNC.

How do I clean prismatic panels? +

Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth and warm water with mild detergent. Avoid solvent cleaners (acetone, methylated spirits, ammonia-based) which can craze acrylic. For greasy build-up in industrial environments, a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and water mix is safe and effective.

Will prismatic sheet yellow over time? +

No. Prismatic sheet is acrylic-based and holds up to long-term UV and fluorescent light exposure without yellowing. We see panels in service for 15+ years with no noticeable colour shift. The pattern moulded into the back may flatten slightly under heat over many years in high-output fittings; this is normal.

Is prismatic sheet fire-rated? +

Standard prismatic sheet meets AS 1530 (Material Fire Tests for Building) and is suitable for use in commercial ceiling fittings under standard Australian building code. For special fire-rated applications (egress lighting, healthcare specific zones) specify a fire-rated grade at quote time.

Can I use prismatic sheet for back-lit signage? +

Yes. Prismatic sheet diffuses LED and fluorescent light evenly behind a printed face, which is why it is widely used in back-lit signage and exhibition panels. For premium signage we usually pair it with a printed translucent vinyl on the smooth front face.

What is the difference between K12, opal and microprism? +

K12 is the most common prismatic pattern: square cells around 4mm across, with a balance of brightness and even diffusion. Microprism uses much finer cells (under 1mm) for a smoother appearance at close range, used in premium architectural lighting. Opal has no pattern at all, just pigment, for the softest and most uniform light.
