Optical clarity

Acrylic tubes and rods carry the same optical clarity, UV stability and finish as cast acrylic sheet, in cylindrical and round-bar formats. P&M Plastics stocks clear acrylic tubes and rods for retail display, lighting, museum cases, aquarium internals, marine cabin fittings and any application that needs glass-like clarity in a curved or columnar shape.

Sizes and formats we stock

Acrylic tube is stocked in clear from 10mm outer diameter up to 250mm OD, in standard wall thicknesses (2mm to 5mm for smaller tubes, 6mm and up for larger). Standard lengths are 2000mm and 3000mm but tubes can be cut to size on the spot. Acrylic rod is held from 3mm diameter through 80mm diameter in clear and a limited colour range.

Colours and grades

Clear is the workhorse for both tube and rod. Opal white, black, smoked and a limited fluorescent and tinted range are stocked for display and lighting work. Premium grades include UV-stabilised exterior tube for outdoor light columns and signage, and cast tube for fabricated assemblies (slightly higher cost than extruded, but bonds and polishes better).

Cast tube compared to extruded tube

Extruded acrylic tube is the more affordable workhorse and is the right pick for general display, lighting and protective shrouds. Cast acrylic tube has a higher molecular weight, polishes to a finer edge finish, bonds more cleanly and machines without crazing, which is why we use it for any tube that has to be cut and joined into a finished assembly (museum cases, aquarium internals, display columns). For straight cut-to-length applications, extruded is fine.

Why P&M Plastics for acrylic tube and rod work

We cut acrylic tubes and rods to size on saws and CNC machines, polish ends to optical clarity, bond into multi-section assemblies, and supply matching solvent cements for client-fabricated work. Our workshop carries a broad live stock so most jobs ship same day or next day from cut.

How We Fabricate Acrylic Tubes & Rods

We fabricate acrylic tube and rod using saw cutting (with a fine-tooth blade), CNC machining for end-finishing and slot work, diamond polishing for optical-grade ends, and solvent bonding with Tensol 12 or Acrifix for invisible joints. Thin-wall tube can be flame polished on the cut end; for any visible join, diamond polish is the gold standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cast and extruded acrylic tube? +

Cast tube is moulded in a controlled cure and has higher molecular weight, which means it polishes to a finer edge finish, bonds with solvent cement more cleanly and machines without crazing. Extruded tube is cheaper, more uniform in wall thickness and good for general display and lighting. For tubes that will be cut and bonded into a finished assembly, choose cast.

Can acrylic tube be bonded end-to-end? +

Yes. Acrylic tubes bond invisibly using solvent cements such as Tensol 12 or Acrifix, provided the cut ends are first diamond polished or machined flat. For best appearance, both ends must be perfectly square and the surfaces must be free of debris. We bond multi-section tubes for client jobs every week.

Can acrylic tube be bent or formed? +

Acrylic tube line-bends in a heated wire bender for shallow curves, and thermoforms over moulds at around 150°C for full-shape forming. For most display applications, straight tube is sufficient; for marine windscreens and curved displays, sheet acrylic is thermoformed instead.

Will acrylic tube and rod yellow outdoors? +

No. Acrylic is one of the few plastics that holds up to long-term outdoor UV without yellowing. UV-stabilised exterior grades are available for permanent outdoor installation and outlast polycarbonate by many years in full sun.

Can you cut acrylic tube to length? +

Yes. We cut acrylic tubes to any length on the spot, with cut tolerances of +/-1mm on the saw and +/-0.2mm on the CNC. Most cut jobs ship same day or next day from order.

How do you polish acrylic tube ends? +

For visible joints we diamond polish the cut ends on a polishing wheel, which produces a glass-clear finish ready for solvent bonding or stand-alone display. For non-visible ends, flame polishing with a sharp gas torch produces an acceptable finish in a fraction of the time.

What is the largest acrylic tube you stock? +

We hold acrylic tube up to 250mm outer diameter as standard, in wall thicknesses from 3mm to 10mm. For larger diameters or unusual wall thicknesses we can source from suppliers on a per-job basis with a few-day lead time.
